Standing for Visibility: Protest Challenges Council's Lack of LGBTQ+ History Recognition

Local LGBTQ+ campaigners and allies are set to gather in Barnsley this Pride Month to protest what they describe as Barnsley Council's failure to adequately recognise LGBTQ+ history.
The demonstration, titled "Standing for Visibility", has been organised in response to concerns that Pride Month commemorations have not sufficiently highlighted the contributions, struggles, and achievements of LGBTQ+ people throughout history by the refusal of raising the progress flag above the town hall.
Organisers say the protest aims to raise awareness of the importance of LGBTQ+ history and encourage greater recognition of the community's role in shaping local and national society.
"Pride is more than a celebration," a spokesperson for the organisers said. "It is also about remembering those who fought for equality and ensuring that their stories are not forgotten."
Supporters argue that recognising LGBTQ+ history is an important part of promoting equality and understanding. They say that visibility can help combat discrimination while ensuring younger generations have access to stories that reflect the diversity of their communities.
The demonstration comes during Pride Month, a time when LGBTQ+ communities around the world celebrate progress made towards equality while also highlighting issues they believe still require attention.
Campaigners are calling on Barnsley Council to expand efforts to acknowledge LGBTQ+ heritage through educational initiatives, public events, and historical displays.
The protest is scheduled to take place from 1.00pm-2.00pm in Barnsley Town Centre, on Saturday 27th June, a day before the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969, with organisers encouraging members of the public to attend and show support for greater recognition of LGBTQ+ history and visibility.
"Our message is simple," the organisers said. "Visibility begins with recognition, and everyone deserves to see their history reflected in the community they call home.".
