There's nothing we love more than having Barnsley's OG drag artist return year after year to support their local LGBTQ community. To many she's known as Gina, to us at Barnsley Pride, she's known simply as - a legend. Here's Gina's take on our quick fire interview.

Who is your LGBTQ+ s/hero (or non-binary)? 

 

I choose Judy Garland as my LGBT icon. In her iconic role in "The Wizard of Oz," Judy Garland portrayed a character that resonated deeply with me. The film's narrative not only celebrated diversity through various mystical characters but also delivered a powerful message on kindness and respect.

What is your earliest memory of pride, and which was the first one you attended? 

 

My first ever pride was Barnsley in 2011, where I performed Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" after winning the heat in a competition called UK’s Drag4U. Since then, I have been part of Barnsley Pride, celebrating my 15th year in 2025 (excluding 2020/21) as part of the town's largest annual LGBTQ+ event.

What are your thoughts on the importance of representation and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community?

 

The fight for equality and acceptance for all around the world continues to this day. Still people feel ashamed for been LGBTQ+ and hide their sexuality leading to suicide, so showing that it's normal, encouraging visibility and we're here, hopefully, will just save a life.

I like nothing more than being at home with my Cocker Spaniel, Maggie. I would instantly be up on my feet to 'Rhythm is a Dancer, by SNAP! You can't beat a good cuppa Tea with mashed potato and steak for comfort food. Favourite gay music icon... It's Cher, b**ch!
