At Barnsley Pride, we proudly stand as a grassroots LGBTQ+ organisation driven by community power, shared purpose, and the belief that real change begins with us. Born from the lived experiences, resilience, and vision of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies, our work is rooted in authenticity, inclusion, and collective empowerment.

We believe that progress is not handed down — it is built together. Every program we lead, every space we create, and every voice we uplift comes from the strength and creativity of our community. As a grassroots organisation, we are guided by the people we serve — not by distant interests — ensuring that our actions always reflect the realities, hopes, and needs of LGBTQ+ lives in Barnsley.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to promote, celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community in Barnsley and create safe, affirming environments where everyone can live freely and with pride. By working from the ground up, we turn compassion into action and solidarity into lasting change.

What is a 'grassroots' pride?

A grassroots Pride refers to a community-led Pride event or movement that is organised from the ground up by local LGBTQ+ people including allies, rather than by large corporations, government bodies, or major institutions.

Core characteristics of grassroots pride:

Community-Led:

Organised by local LGBTQ+ people including allies, activists, and volunteers — not large organisations or local authorities.

Inclusive and Intersectional:
Ensures representation of all identities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum, especially those often marginalised — including trans, nonbinary, intersex, BIPOC, and disabled members.

Non-Commercial:
Prioritises authenticity and accessibility over profit or sponsorships. Often relies on donations, community support, and volunteer efforts.

Activism-Focused:
Remembers Pride’s origins in protest and resistance (like the Stonewall Uprising), emphasising ongoing struggles for equality and justice.

Locally Rooted:
Reflects the unique needs, challenges, and culture of the local LGBTQ+ community it serves.

A grassroots Pride is about reclaiming Pride as a movement, not just 'a pop music festival' — celebrating queer joy while staying grounded in activism, solidarity, and community empowerment.

Why we work with Barnsley Civic and The Garrison.

Working in partnership with Barnsley Civic and The Garrison helps Barnsley Pride stay true to its grassroots spirit by strengthening our ties to the local community. These partnerships are built on shared values of inclusivity, creativity, and accessibility — ensuring that Pride in Barnsley remains community-led, locally supported, and rooted in the voices of the people it represents.

By collaborating with trusted local venues that celebrate Barnsley’s culture and diversity, we can create safe, welcoming spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered. Together, we keep Pride authentic.
