Barnsley Pride: The Charity_

We asked. You replied. We listened and took action.

We're in an exciting new era as we head in to becoming a registered charity. But there's still a lot of work to do.

For us this means we are able to deliver our year-round programme - Barnsley Pride in the Community - and our annual pride event on another level with Promoting, Celebrating and Supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Barnsley as our three core values.

At Barnsley Pride, we are proud to be a grassroots organisation built from the ground up by the very communities we serve. Our work is guided by the voices, experiences, and leadership of local people who are directly affected by the issues we address.

We believe that lasting change begins at the community level — through collaboration, mutual support, and collective action. As a grassroots organisation, we prioritise community empowerment, transparency, and inclusive participation in every aspect of our mission.

Our strength lies in our people: volunteers, members, and partners who share a commitment to creating meaningful and sustainable impact. By staying rooted in local realities and accountable to our communities, we ensure that every initiative we undertake reflects their needs, aspirations, and vision for the future. Read more.

What this means for you

Year-round presence Already Barnsley Pride is moving beyond a single “Pride day” event toward Barnsley Pride in the Community — offering workshops, social groups, support services throughout the year. Registered charity status helps make that sustainable.

Safe and inclusive spaces With more stable funding and trust from the community, Barnsley Pride can invest in safe spaces, accessible events, mental health or peer support, education and advocacy that go beyond performance and festivity to more structural support.

Partnerships & collaboration As a charity, more doors open for collaboration with local government, businesses, schools, health providers, other charities. These partnerships can lead to shared programmes, resource sharing, leveraging expertise, co-delivery of services.

Advocacy & education Supporting legislation, raising awareness around LGBTQ+ issues, conducting educational workshops, influencing policies locally — the charitable status strengthens legitimacy in those areas. It means Barnsley Pride can more firmly stake a claim as a voice for inclusion, equality, visibility.

Community representation Registered charities often have obligations to report on their impact and to engage communities in decision-making. That means Barnsley Pride will likely deepen engagement with the diverse LGBTQ+ community in Barnsley — ensuring inclusive programming that meets real needs.
