Trans Awareness: Honouring Every Journey

Each November, we come together to recognise Trans Awareness Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the resilience, diversity, and contributions of transgender and gender-diverse people. This month invites us to honour trans voices, learn about the challenges many still face, and take meaningful steps toward inclusion, respect, and equality.

Barnsley Pride in the Community, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, is proud to support Trans-Form Barnsley, a local social group dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming space for transgender and gender-diverse people in the area. Through this partnership, Barnsley Pride helps amplify trans voices, promote understanding, and strengthen community connections.

Together, they work to provide peer support, raise awareness, and celebrate trans identities through inclusive events and initiatives. By standing alongside Trans-Form Barnsley, Barnsley Pride in the Community reaffirms its commitment to equality, visibility, and the celebration of diversity across Barnsley.

At the heart of Trans Awareness Month is Transgender Awareness Week (November 13–19), leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20) — a solemn day to honour the lives lost to anti-trans violence and to reaffirm our commitment to creating safer, more affirming communities for all.

Voicing our community

"...When I became 12 years old, it all kind of started shifting. I didn’t like skirts, even though I still wore them, and started to identify as a tomboy. But even that didn’t feel right." - 'X', local trans resident.

During this week (13-19 November) we are inviting the community to share their journey and stories with us on Spotlight. These stories provide a local platform for the Trans community, and to educate the wider community in to what life is like living and working in Barnsley, whilst identifying as Transgender.

Trans Awareness in November is not just about visibility — it’s about understanding, solidarity, and action. Whether by sharing stories, educating ourselves, or advocating for change, each of us has a role to play in ensuring that every trans and gender-diverse person is seen, respected, and celebrated for who they are.

What's the difference?
