In response to the recent Supreme Court ruling that only biological women are identified as women, the Barnsley Trans community joined many nationwide to show Trans rights are human rights in a protest on Monday, 21st April at Barnsley Town Hall.
This decision is not only a profound misstep in the pursuit of justice and equality but a direct affront to the dignity, identity, and rights of transgender individuals across the nation.
Gender is not determined solely by biology. It is a deeply personal, lived experience that encompasses identity, expression, and the right to be seen and respected as who one truly is. By denying trans women recognition as women, the Court has legitimised discrimination, emboldened bigotry, and eroded the fundamental human rights of an already marginalised community. (Statement)
Over 60 people attended, despite the rally being organised only 5 days beforehand, including Councillor Hannah Kitching, Leader of the Liberal Democrats.
Protest organiser, Kieran stated "I organised this rally/protest in opposition of the recent UK supreme court rulings. I am a Transgender man, I was feeling helpless in the wake of a future filled now with legal uncertainty. Knowing this was essentially an attack on Transgender Women, I felt I needed to show solidarity- but more importantly that even in an old mining town like Barnsley there was a whole network of people who had the compassion and determination to support our cause."
Reassurance for the Trans community
In light of the ruling, Barnsley Pride would like to reassure our Trans community that on July 12th, additional restroom facilities will be made available for those who feel uncomfortable using the men or women's toilet facilities. Although we do have all-gender portaloos (located at the side of the main stage), Barnsley Civic will provide all-gender facilities and The Garrison will have accessible disabled restrooms.
