ABOUT US

WHERE IT ALL STARTED, TO PRESENT DAY

Barnsley Pride is the annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebration for Barnsley and the surrounding South Yorkshire area. It developed from a relatively small local community event into one of the borough’s main inclusive public festivals.

Early Barnsley Pride events were modest, community-led gatherings organised largely by volunteers and local LGBTQ+ supporters. Organisers faced challenges around funding, venues and visibility, especially in a traditionally industrial Yorkshire town where LGBTQ+ public representation had historically been limited.

By 2018, Barnsley Pride was attracting more than 1,300 attendees, with performances, stalls and entertainment in the town centre on Wellington Street. Organisers described that year as a turning point and hoped to secure larger venues and stronger council support.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the event became more closely integrated with the town’s official cultural programming through “Barnsley’s Big Weekend”, helping expand its scale and visibility. The main celebrations are now typically held in Mandela Gardens, with additional venues such as Barnsley Civic and The Garrison hosting markets, acoustic performances and cabaret acts.

Barnsley Pride presents itself as a “grassroots pride” organisation focused on year-round community work as well as the annual festival. The organisation now runs workshops, support programmes and outreach activities under “Pride in the Community”, backed partly by National Lottery funding.

The visibility of an openly celebrated Pride event in the town centre is therefore viewed by many organisers and supporters as a symbol of changing attitudes and greater acceptance in the region.

POWERING THE MAGIC BEHIND THE SCENES.

Behind every annual Pride event is a dedicated small team of volunteers who give 100% in time, energy, and passion to make it all happen. Working tirelessly behind the scenes, we coordinate logistics, support performers, manage outreach, and ensure every detail reflects the spirit of inclusion and celebration. Our efforts are driven not by recognition, but by a shared commitment to community, visibility, and equality. Through long hours and countless moving parts, our team transform vision into reality - creating a space where people can come together, feel seen, and celebrate Pride in all its vibrancy.

HOW DO I APPLY TO BE PART OF THE YEAR ROUND TEAM?

It’s about building inclusive spaces every day—planning, supporting, and collaborating to keep the spirit of Pride alive throughout the year. From organising workshops and community initiatives to amplifying voices and creating moments of connection, the team works together to make a lasting impact. It’s a shared effort rooted in respect, visibility, and celebration, where every contribution helps strengthen a community that feels seen, heard, and valued all year long.
